Platinum
Platinum is one of the world's rarest precious jewellery metals. It is mined in only a few places in the world, the most important locations being South Africa, Russia, Canada, Australia and at the Stillwater Mine in Montana, USA. To emphasize the uniqueness of platinum jewellery, it is 50 times more rare than gold jewellery.
Platinum is a pure hypoallergenic precious metal. Generally jewellery-grade platinum will be 90% or 95% pure platinum. The latter 5% to 10% generally being a material from the Platinum family keeping the metal as anti-allergenic as possible. Not only is it anti-allergenic but it is also one of the world's strongest and most enduring metals. It also is one of the heaviest, weighing 60% more than karat gold. With it's durability jewellery made of platinum requires less maintenance than other metals (maintenance would include such things as claw re-tippings and half shanks).
